= Rare."De schrijver: hij is negentien als zijn boek wordt gepubliceerd. Hij baart opzien en in literaire kringen zijn alle ogen op hem gericht. Hij wordt zesenzeventig jaar oud. Er is na dat ene boek nooit meer een letterkundig werk van hem verschenen. Het boek: het telt maar eenenzestig pagina's. Het wordt, al bij het verschijnen, beschouwd als de quintessens van 'het moderne levensgevoel'. Het zal een hardnekkig ondergronds bestaan blijven leiden, ook al zijn de schaarse edities bij voortduring alleen in beperkte kring verkrijgbaar. Weinigen hebben het gelezen: toch duikt het op in nagenoeg alle studies over de tijd waarin het verscheen. De verzamelde commentaren overtreffen de tekst vele malen in lengte. Wie dit boek nooit onder ogen heeft gehad loopt grote kans toch in aanraking te zijn gekomen met de symbolische naweeën, de cultus ervan. Het is er in dat geval mee als met een mythologie zonder oertekst, een godsdienst zonder bijbel.(...) De schrijver is 'de merkwaardigste verschijning van het Jonge Wenen' genoemd. Het boek gaat door voor 'de klassieke roman over de identiteitscrisis van het fin-de-siècle' en voor 'een van de mooiste poëtische documenten van het symbolisme'."
