Knuttel 20417 (French edition) and 20419 (Dutch edition): "Deze in het fransch en hollandsch uitgegeven karakterschetsen in anti-patriottischen geest, maakten veel opgang. Zij werden destijds toegeschreven aan van Goens (...), die echter in zijn autobiographie schreef: "The Catalogue de Tableaux was written at the Hague, I never knew by whom, but certainly by a Man of fashion and taste"".

First and only ed. of this rare work on the history of the Spanish Netherlands under Philip II by Henricus Paulinus (†1602), published only 60 years after his death. With an appendix on the history of West and East Frisia at that time, in which Paulinus describes i.a. his misadventures as a negotiator on behalf of East Frisia. In this capacity, he was sent to Franeker to discuss the Dutch occupation of the Ems (during the war with Spain) and the privateers devastating the East Frisian sea trade. He was arrested, however, and exchanged in 1586 for Onno van Ewsum, who had been captured by East Frisia. De Buck 2303; cf. 2017; Van der Aa XV, p.124. A rare Emden edition.

= First edition of this important early source for the history of Peru, warranted by the author below colophon. Palau 89549; Sabin 24133: "This work was forbidden to be circulated, and ordered to be destroyed by the Council of the Indies"; Howgego F26: "Fernández began his history of Peru while in South America, but later, when he had returned to Spain, on the suggestion of Sandoval, President of the Council of the Indies, enlarged the scope of his work and added to it a first part dealing with the movements of Pizarro and his followers (...) His narrative, dedicated to Philip II, covers the insurrection of Francisco Hernandez Giron, the rebellion of Gonzalo Pizarro and the administration of Pedro de la Gasca. As such it is regarded as one of the most comprehensive of the period. Garcilaso de la Vega who quoted at length from Fernández, fiercely attacked his version of the events, accusing him of partiality and animosity towards certain leading characters. Whatever the reason may have been, however, although probably because of the truth of his account, the Council of the Indies prohibited the printing and sale of Fernández' book in the provinces under its jurisdiction".
