Anonymous (early 20th cent.) (View of de Houtzaagmolen de Bijgeval in Utrecht). Drawing, pen and brown ink, 20,3x17 cm., "houtzaagmolen by Utrecht buit de Weert" and "21 januari 1911" in pencil. - AND 5 other drawings, all Dutch views.
- Soiled and foxed; offsetting from pins near left and right edge.
= On wove paper with watermark of Whatman dated 1833. Vincent Jansz van der Vinne died in 1811, so not by him. Perhaps by Vincent van der Vinne van Lee (1798-1876).
- Tipped onto mount; torn loose at both left corners (reattached).
AND a small drawing by H. HEUFF, "Molen bij Trekvaart Voorburg" (pencil, 8x10,5 cm., signed etc. in lower margin. Dam. and stained in top margin).
= Probably all or mostly all by the same artist. Perhaps by Martinus or Izaak Schouman. Partly on laid paper with the D.& G. Blaauw watermark, partly on blue laid paper. I.a. ships in front of Dordrecht, ships anchored and various scenes of ships in (very) choppy sea.

- Badly browned and stained; paper brittle; several marginal tears; corners chipped. Sold w.a.f.

= Amateur draughtsman. Vague annotation in brown ink near upper edge: "No. 3 63". Perhaps an auction lot number. His estate was sold in auction in 1829 in Amsterdam by P. Meijer Warnars.
AND 5 other drawings, i.a. a slightly naive street view of Amstelveen, dated 1808, a small drawing showing the St. Bavo church in Haarlem, signed "van Hove 3/12 36" and a very accurate copy after C. Pronk of the church in Huizen.

= Rare drawing. With an extensive contemporary authentication on verso: "Het plaatselijke bestuur van Wageningen certificeert bij dezen dat dit stuk is een eigen werk van den schilder Wernerus de Beedt, binnen deze stad woonachtig. Wageningen den 18 April 1800 vijfentwintig (...).
- Leaf sl. browned.
= With signature/ signed "Abraham Begeyn 1650" or "Bega Jzn" in pencil on verso. With a partial watermark of a horn. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXV.
- A few foxed spots in blank margin; empty leaves of album sl. foxed. Corners of album worn.

- Somewhat browned and foxed.
= The paper appears to be Japanese paper, which Van Borrsom used for other drawings. Cf. the drawing of the same village by Van Borssom in the British Museum and in extenso the accompanying 2nd note (mentioning this drawing) online. From the Goll van Franckenstein collection (sold Amsterdam, 1833, 'kunstboek' F, no.29) and sold again in the W. Pitcairn Knowles sale, 1895 (described as van Borssom, lot 91), with his collector's mark (Lugt 2643) and of Rud. Ph. Goldschmidt (±1840-1914) (Lugt 2926) on verso. Goldschmidt's collection sold in 1917 in Frankfurt (this drawing as Hulswit, lot 283. The church was greatly altered in 1718/19, so Hulswit would be unlikely). With the manuscript collector's mark of 't Hooft ("Hft") and extensive notes by him in pencil on the provenance and on the attribution. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXVII.

= With a mounted card on the same mount, confirming the authenticity of the drawing: "Schets Joh. Bosboom L. Smit-Bosboom".
- Laid down on sl. later paper.
= Interesting and attractive drawing. Temporary buildings can be seen, housing various attractions i.a. a show with scenes from the battle of Waterloo and sea battle of Algiers, a menagerie and acrobats. Also some streetvendors, i.a. a 'poffertjeskraam' near to the left. On one of the buildings to the right pamphlets and announcements are attached, i.a. for the Menagerie van Aken, which was based in Rotterdam. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXVII.
- Browned; closed tear in right edge; a few imperfections to the surface.
- Paper agetoned and fingersoiled.
= Attribution (?) on verso "Breuhaus de Groot' in pencil. Sketches of coastlines of i.a. Terschelling, Vlieland, Earholm, Kattegat near Kolding.
- Somewhat duststained.
= On laid paper with French lily coat of arms and GVH monogram. With the collector's marks of D.P. Brondgeest: stamped mark on the mount (Lugt 4331) and manuscript monograms and topographical identification on verso in pencil and red pen and ink. Zuilenstein was bombed and destroyed in W.W. II.
- Sl. agetoned and dustsoiled.
= With the collector's mark of Joseph-Guillaume-Jean Camberlyn (1783-1861). His collection was sold in three parts in 1865 and 1867 by Guichardot, Paris. This drawing was sold as lot 91 (section of drawings) in the November sale of 1865. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXVIII.
- Most drawings in very fine condition, some with the following minor defects: some smudging; occas. trifle/ sl. foxed in outer blank margin; 2 drawings w. sm. tear in inner blank margin (not affecting the watercolour); a few lvs. fingersoiled in outer blank margin. Bookblock loose; heraldic bookplate on upper pastedown.
= The skilfully executed and beautiful drawings bear strong resemblance to the 18th and 19th century drawings of butterflies by J.C. or J. Sepp or A.J. Rösel van Rosenhof. The main focus of the drawings is on the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into the butterfly. All on paper with "J. Honig & Zoonen", "J. Kool", "De Ervens Dk Blauw", "J. Kloppenburg", "Van Gelder", a beehive w. Orange tree or the Pro Patria (2 diff. types) watermark. With a silhouette portrait drawing frontisp. of probably the original owner W.D.V. de Graaf (1762-1846), a Utrecht pharmacist. On the backstrip his name and title "Inlandsche Kapellen" are given.Came into possession of the present owner by descent. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXX.

- Foxed; sm. portion (w. stamp) of lower right corner detached.
= With the mark on the drawings and the ticket of the artist's atelier auction on the mounts (Paris, 1865, lots 369 and 361) (Lugt 426a).
= Amateur artist and civil servant. Son of famous physician P. Camper.
= Nice cartoon, expressing the futuristic idea that a long distance connection by telephone could be created between the UK and Africa. The conversation between on the one hand a native African servant holding the phone for his master (who is lying in a hammock surrounded by mosquitos) and on the other hand an Englishman sleeping in London results in the complaint from Africa that his master cannot sleep because of the loud snoring of the Englishman's wife and the Englishman complaining that he cannot hear anything because of the noise that the mosquitos make. Monogrammist not traced.
