"The Silva was written as a protest against the destruction of trees in England which was being carried on by the glass factories and iron furnaces; it succeeded in inducing land-owners to start in on a much needed restoration program that had a lasting effect on the British economy. John Evelyn (1620-1706) was a conscientious public servant who is now best rembered for his Diary. But gardens had been a life-long interest and in his horticultural works we find the public servant and country gentleman combined, in essence the best product of the English way of life" (Hunt 296 on the ed. 1664).
