= According to a notice opposite the title, there were 2 different editions of this work, the so-called "carte-de-visite edition" (that has 76 pages w. 23 questions each) and the "Imperial edition" (with 38 pages w. 40 questions each). The entries in our copy are mostly in German and are dated between 1877-1887. A rare and entertaining use of the cartes-de-visite that were so hugely popular between 1850 and 1880. "This Book is intended to serve as a record for the tastes and characteristics of friends, in short, for their mental photographs, just as another class of Albums serves to keep their physical ones."

= Interesting collection compiled by Derksen Staats (father of the painter J.J. Derksen Staats), one of many Dutchmen who worked for the Nederlandsch-Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorwegmaatschappij (NZASM). From ±1890 onwards the NZASM worked on the construction of the railway between Pretoria and Maputo (Mozambique), which was opened in 1894. The photographs in the current album showing the section between Machadodorp and Komatiepoort (for a large part following the Krokodilrivier), containing i.a. a view of Maputo Bay, the bridge over the Komati river, the station of Komatiepoort, the station of Kaapmuiden, Krokodilpoort, the tunnel between Waterval-Onder and Waterval-Boven and the station of Waterval-Onder. Also including many photographs showing the impressive landscape (several with western and native people posing), two photographs of a native African village and a stopping place for horse carts (on the building in the background: "[...] Kaufmann & Co. Algemeene Handelaars").
