80/1400 Maritime history Model of the fluyt Anna Maria 80/1400 Maritime history Model of the fluyt Anna Maria
80/1400 [Maritime history]. (Model of the fluyt "Anna Maria"), second half 20th cent., 95(l.)x18(w.)x75(h.) cm. (total size), 8 cotton sails, 4 flags, 16 cannons, 1 lifeboat, 2 large wooden anchors, on a wooden base.

= With a small archive of printed and photocopied information on the building of ship models in general and on the specific fluyt-ship the "Anna Maria" and its history. The "Anna Maria" was originally built by the shipbuilders Andries and Jacob Borst in 1694 on the wharf "De Olifant" on Kattenburg in Amsterdam. The construction of the "Anna Maria" was finished in the astonishingly short period of three months, which shows that the building of this type of ships was very much a routine business. The "Anna Maria" was mainly used on journeys between Holland and Sweden, France and Portugal, with cargo of salt, wine, sugar and general mechandise. In November 1708, she left the harbour of Dalarö, just outside of Stockholm, with a cargo of steel, copper and pine wood. However, due to early severe frost, exiting the harbour was not possible and they were forced to spend the months in Dalarö. Most of the crew left the ship, leaving the remaining 5 crew members to take care of the ship. The cold weather forced these men to seek shelter in the best isolated part of the ship, where they created a more comfortable place to stay and where they construed a small fireplace for cooking and heating. This eventually led to the destruction of the ship: it perished as a result of a fire on board and an ensueing explosion of gunpowder on the 6th of February 1709.
