It is one of the first British descriptions of northern Lapland, treating i.a. the Lapp population, huts, language and poetry, religion, employment and wildlife (incl. reindeer, woodcocks and eiders), where they arrived in the Midsummer: "At twelve o'clock this night we saw the Sun in full beauty. The Horizon being remarkably clear, gave us a most delightful view of that, to us, extraordinary sight. (...) The Inhabitants of this climate no doubt reap many advantages from this circumstance during the Summer season; but, alas! a long and dreary Winter reverses the scene and involves them in continual darkness." "The succes of Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition, described in the present work, which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents. Cook proved there was no "Terra Australis" which supposedly lay between New Zealand and South America, but became convinced that there must be land beyond the ice fields. Further visits were made to New Zealand, and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebridies, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island and a number of smaller islands (...) William Hodges was the artist with the expedition" (Hill).

(Judd/ Lind p.1); "On his return from the second voyage Cook was promptly rewarded for his achievements (...). In 1776 he volunteered for his third and final voyage, with specific instructions to investigate the coasts of the north Pacific, and to settle once and for all the question of the northwest passage. (...) While on Hawaii [after his return from the Bering Sea] relationships with the natives deteriorated, resulting in the death of Cook (14.2.79) during a skirmish. After the theft by natives of one of the Discovery's boats, Cook had gone ashore with a party of marines. A scuffle ensued which compelled the party to return to their boats, but during the retreat Cook received a blow from behind and was subsequently overpowered." (Howgego C175).
