= Letter to the collector and print publisher D.P. Baas on the artist's plan to make a portrait of Albert Schweitzer (different from the one described above): "(...) Vanmorgen kreeg ik uw brief, dat wij tot een accoord gekomen zijn. Maar inmiddels rijpt het plan in mij meer en meer. En ik kom tot de overtuiging, dat het toch mijn laatste grootste schets moet worden, wil het werkelijk mijn beste werk zijn. Mijn gezondheid is niet zo best meer, en dit wordt als 't ware het slotaccoord van mijn leven (...) Ik wil dit maken. Dit wordt Schweitzer volledig. Die andere met schrijftafel en hondje kan iedere geleerde zijn [Reitsma-Valença describes the work above]. Maar hieruit begrijpt iedereen, die de kop niet eens kent, dat het Schweitzer moet zijn (...) Ik zend u de 2 schetsen waar het om gaat nog even toe. Maar let u vooral niet op de uitvoering en uitdrukking van de gezichten, die er natuurlijk nu nog helemaal niet zijn. Als ik die op al mijn schetsen al zou maken, zou mijn nodige impuls ervoor voortijdig opgebruikt zijn. Iets dat héél goed moet worden, kan maar éénmaal (...)".
