= Monod 719. Söderberg p.94: "(...) Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) represented a genuine new departure. His magnum opus "Badauderies p.(...)" can be compared with Lepère's as a work of reportage illustrated with woodcuts. Whereas Lepère is a nostalgic local patriot, Vallotton is a blasphemous ironist. The exciting thing about Vallotton's pictures is that he so elegantly flouts the laws of perspective and old established ideas of pictorial balance. Instead of xylographs he makes surface woodcuts - the technique which survived into the new century. Black, white and patterned surfaces are linked together with naiveté and impudence, providing scope for the absurd and the satirical. The book was inspired by Octave Uzanne, who managed to assemble for the writing of the text a remarkable team of authors comprising Felix Fénéon, Thadée Nathanson, Jules Renard, Tristan Bernard and Léon Blum. We are now close to the group of artists known as Les Nabis, and to the editors of the magazine La Revue blanche. This circle embraced a wide range of opinions. Vallotton, for example, managed by dint of his blasphemy and irony to make an enemy of the devout Sérusier." SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XXXI.
