Het zal je niet ontgaan dat het vers, met zijn strakke rhythme, en met zijn rymloze structuur, weer verbonden is met de blokkenstructuur die de jongens opbouwen. Het is daarin ook een gedicht van de 20e eeuw, die met vlakken werkt (denk aan Mondriaan) en met blokken (denk aan wat er op Sonsbeek te zien viel!). Er bestaan al zuivere stereometrisch bepaalde sculpturen van imponerende kracht. (...) De jongens zijn Gymnasiasten, voor wie antieke kultuur niet is opengegaan. De leraar (lerares) heeft wèl dagelijks de tekst laten opslaan, maar heeft hem niet verlicht, doch verduisterd. Hy is een symbool van het miserable onderwijs in de klassieken, dat maar al te gangbaar was en is. De jongens zijn in dìe zin "berooid tot op het bot". (...) Wat de laatste regel "herrijzen naar het licht" betreft - je weet van de vogel Phoenix, die sterft en dan uit zijn eigen as herrijst. Wij mogen dit voor onze bedreigde cultuur toch hopen (...)".
