= In 1853, the Amsterdam Canal Company (AKM) was founded with the aim of operating 'a continuous community between the North and South Sea, in connection with the shipping interests of Amsterdam and the embankment and reclamation of land in the eastern and western IJ, as well as the Wijkermeer'. On 16 June 1863, the concession was granted to the AKM by Royal Decree to realise the North Sea Canal, because the existing North Holland Canal could no longer handle the increased shipping traffic. The plan was to dig a canal from the IJ directly through the dunes to the North Sea and thus realise the shortest possible connection. On 1 November 1876 the canal was opened by King William III and the celebratory speech was given by chairman of the AKM Simon Wolf Josephus Jitta. The king then made the first trip through the locks. The AKM was given the right to levy lock, canal and harbour fees for 99 years, but these fees were not allowed to exceed the costs that the users of the North Holland Canal had to pay. The North Sea Canal did not bring the expected returns for the AKM. In 1883 the canal was transferred to Rijkswaterstaat and the AKM was liquidated. The archive also consists of the records concerning "Sluisbouw IJmuiden" and subsequent expropriation. Very interesting large archive concerning the history of the Noordzeekanaal.
