= The second German edition (first Dutch ed. Amst. 1665) of the famous description by Nieuhof of the first embassy undertaken by the VOC to the emperor of China and one of the very few non-Jesuit sources of the period. Cordier, Bibl. Sinica p. 2346. Walravens, China illustrata 63/64 (later German editions): "Nieuhofs Chinawerk ist bis heute eines der bedeutendsten und gesuchtesten. Allein die 150 Abbildungen und Karten, die das Buch zieren und die nach Zeichnungen des Autors aufgeführt wurden, haben beachtlichen Wert. Bis weit in das 18.Jahrhundert hinein wurden sie immer wieder nachgedruckt und nachgeschnitten und prägten weitgehend das Chinabild der Zeit". The double-p. plates are mainly panoramic city views. "Was aber seinem Buch den höchsten Wert verleiht ist die Fülle prachtvollster Kupfertafeln von Städten, Landschaften, Volkstypen" (Henze III, p.612).

One of the most extensive works and the main old source on the Dutch East Indies with many documents, partly lost by now. Also containing important descriptions of i.a. Cape of Good Hope, China, Japan and Ceylon and two early voyages to Australia with interesting maps. = Rare atlas, possibly an early edition of Desnos' later published atlas with an almost identical title, which contains 66 maps. Apart from the title-p., the publisher's and cartographer's names have been erased from in the cartouche. Two of the maps carry the date "1765" in the cartouche. No copy found (except possibly a similar atlas sold in our rooms in 1997, mentioning P. Bourgoin as the cartographer). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXIII.
