Joseph Pitton de Tournefort and Paul Hermann, whose observations ultimately resulted in their principal works: Eléments de botanique (Paris, 1694) and Paradisus batavus (Leyden, 1698). Year of publication noted on title page as "MDCXIC", which STCN interprets as 1691. ODNB; Davy de Virville, Histoire de la Botanique en France (Paris, 1954), p.43.
