= Abraham Heidanus (1597-1678) was a Dutch Calvinist minister and professor at the University of Leyden, who was banished from the University in 1676 because of his hard-lined Cartesianism. Heidanus is most famous for his Consideratien (Considerations) in which he protests against the University senate's anti-Cartesian resolution to banish him (P.C. Molhuysen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis der Leidse Universiteit, pp.324-7).

The Nakaz (Instruction) was meant to serve as a guideline for the commission. Part of the 655 articles is directly derived from the writings of Montesquieu and Cesare Beccaria.
