76/ 711 Zwart, P. [Film]. "Het linnen venster door C.J. Graadt van Roggen. Inleiding tot de Serie monografieën over filmkunst (...) N°1". Uncoated frontwrapper of the first vol. of the Serie monografieën over filmkunst, 1931, 23x17,2 cm., recto w. letterpress and photomontage printed in red and blue, verso blank, tipped onto grey paper mount at corners.

= Verso mount boldly signed "Piet Zwart/ Wassenaar/ Holland / 1930" in blue pencil.

In total 10 (instead of 12 vols. planned) were published in the Serie monografieën over filmkunst by W.L. & J. Brusse N.V., 1931-1933, edited by C.J. Graadt van Roggen. Frontwrapper (used as advertising leaf?) of no.1, the introductory volume to the series. PZ-060; Monguzzi p.77; Brentjes p.228; Broos/ Hefting p.82; Andel p.304; W.L. & J. Brusse p.46 and no.721.

(Broos '73, p.72). "Zwart's most important work for the publisher W.L. & J. Brusse of Rotterdam was a ten-part series of monographs on the film arts (...). These rank among his finest work, and bring into focus many of the earlier experiments. Montage and mutiple layers of ink are used throughout. (...) The play factor reigns, and all stops are pulled out with every conceivable contrast - size, color, direction, shape, and number as the images almost reach the realm of film itself" (Purvis p.77f).

= Broos '94, p.77; Andel p.209. "In 1925 Zwart produced for his own amusement a number of purely abstract compositions, which, like many of his advertisements, were composed on location at the printer. One, based on diagonals, clearly shows the Lissitzky influence. The use of color overprinting will later become a distinguishing ingredient in his work. These compositions reflect the same approach as the advertisements, but not being bound to texts, they move a step further into abstraction" (Purvis, p.69); "In zijn vrije uren in Parijs houdt Piet Zwart zich bovendien bezig met enkele abstracte typografische composities, vrije werken die de invloed van Lissitzky en Mondriaan verraden (...). (Broos/ Hefting p.87); ''The best examples of his use of photomontage are to be found in the 1933 Delft Kabels information booklet (...)'' (Purvis p.72). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XXXVI.
