76/1188 Winkel, H.H. (?-1943). Four letters signed "Herman (Winkel)" (1x "H"), one letter w. envelope, to "Ouwe Ladykiller"/ "Geachte familie"/ "Mijn beste blanke broeder"/ "My old Ladykiller", dated "28-2-'41"/ n.d. (3x), all in pen and blue ink, 1 leaf, recto only, envelope addressed to "Fam. H. Stil", pen and blue ink, recto.

= As a member of the Dutch resistance, office clerk Hermannus Hendrikus Winkel was arrested on September 29, 1941 for possession of an illegal firearm. He was put up in the Scheveningen "Oranjehotel" and was transferred to Bochum prison, Germany on March 21, 1942, where he died in January 1943. According to a note from a Bochum prison administrative assistant, his death was due to an acute pulmonary embolism: "Ihr Sohn Herman war nur einen Tag krank (Lungenentzündung). Der Tod trat ganz plötzlich und überaschend ein (Lungenembolie)". The letters were probably written from Venlo when Herman was already a resistance member, as he apologizes to J.W. He also comments on Venlo as being "zoo'n smerige ongezellige stad" and his contacts with the local girls: "Alleen denken sommige meisjes, dat ik neigingen heb om een geheele harem op touw te zetten. Doch voorlopig heb ik daar nog geen tijd voor, alhoewel het idee verduiveld aanlokkelijk is".

AND 2 other letters addressed to (members of) the Stil family: Betsy Vos on the death of her son and resistance member Rinke (23 June 1945), and father Stil on his arrest and stay in Arnhem prison (undated).
