- Small flaked spot in the central panel on the frontcover. Otherwise a very fine, interleaved copy.

= Rare early and nicely illustrated almanac, with interesting entries in a well legible hand. The manuscript annotations, dating from the period from 1714 to 1741, are by Katharina van Tarelink, referring to (expensive) presents given and received, naming some of the recipients of these presents, clothing purchases, births and baptisms (daughter Anna and Marregreta), illness and death (her daughter Marregreta), as well as the ministers who baptized the children (i.a. "domine d'Outreijn"). She also lists her payments to the various teachers (dance master, French teacher, reading teacher etc.) of her children and to her employees as well as to the wet nurses that helped her with her newborn children. Some of the other names listed: Willem van Asperen, Abraham and Pieter van Tarelink, suster Droogenhorst and members of the family Engelbrechts. She also lists about 7 cookery recipes. On the almanac see Salman p.395. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXVIII.

Comptoir Almanach Op 't Jaer Onses Heeren Jesu Christi, M.D.C.C.XVII. Voorsien met alle de Jaer, Paerden, Beesten, en Leer-marckten (...). Door Jan Albertsz. van Dam. Amst., Wed. C. Stichter, 1716, 2 parts in 1 vol., (32); (8)p., woodcut title-vignette and 13 ills., printed in black and red, contemp. richly silver-stamped panelled vellum w. on both sides a central image (recto: the virgin of Holland; verso: three drummers), a panorama of Amsterdam below and an elaborate border incorporating 27 coats of arms of Dutch cities, sm. 4to.

- Contents fine. A few rubbed spots on binding.

= An interesting copy of year 1717 of the same almanac in an identical binding, w. similar manuscript entries by Katharina van Tarelink (1695-?), mostly overlapping in content with the almanac above, but written in a more chronologically ordered fashion. Apparently this was the almanac that a member of the Tarelink family (Katharina?) wished to keep in the family, judging by an annotation in pen on the frontcover: "Deeze alamanach moet bewaard Bij den genealogies. No.15". The entries begin wih the marriage of Katharina with "Johannis van Droogenhorst", she was 19 at the time and he was 44 years old. Johannis Droogenhorst (1669-1732) was a wealthy merchant; the Van Tarelink family was equally wealthy and had earned their money in whaling industry and as merchants of grain. The third family related to the wealthy Van Tarelinks was the Ingelbrechts family (who were active in the business of sugar refinery). Many members of these three families were related to each other, either directly through marriage or indirectly, making the Van Tarelink family one of the richest of the Dutch Republic (listed by Kees Zandvliet as no.85 of the 500 wealthiest families of the Dutch Republic).

= Very rare set, in good and complete condition. With the rare folding map ("A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track Across the Western Portion of North America, from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean (...)" (39x60,5 cm.). The expedition by Lewis and Clark was one of the major factors leading up to the opening up of the North West of America. After earlier plans conceived by President Jefferson had been shelved, the Louisiana Conquest was the logical moment for the execution of his wish to explore the region between the Mississippi and the Pacific. The map of Lewis and Clark's track as well as their account of the exploration (first publ. Philadelphia, 1814), more or less directly led to the Great American Westward movement. Howes L317; cf. Johnson, America Explored p.219ff; Church1309; Sabin 40830 and Howgego L31. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXII.
