Describing the life of the famous Dutch general, the book gives a good survey of the history of the Netherlands between 1627 and 1647. The plates depicting i.a. plans of Breda, Den Bosch, Maastricht, Oldenzaal and Wesel; sea-battles and also plates of Brazilian and African interest: Olinda, the Rio Grande and Angola. The author defends the thesis that "a stadholder would be a menace to and not the perfection of the aristocratic constitution, in particular the Prince of Orange whose ancestors tried to attain sovereign authority and whose private interests are not necessarily in accordance with the national interest." (Van de Klashorst).
- Fold. plan dam. in centre, laid down on modern paper and reattached; waterstain in outer lower corner; occas. sl. foxed; upper hinge widening.
