= Fine illustrated Dutch edition, with very sharp impressions of the plates of the famous complaint by Bartolomé de Las Casas (1474-1566). It is usually found together with Saeghman's edition of De Groote Spaensche Tiranye, which was published in 1667. First published in Spanish in 1552, it made Las Casas the first political activist of the New World. His account of the sufferings of the Indians at the hands of the Spaniards remained very popular, especially during the Eighty-Years War of the Dutch against the Spaniards, when the work was published with the aim of discrediting the Spanish enemy. It was first published in Dutch in 1578 and was enlarged in 1621 with an account of the discovery of the New World, and a note on the situation in the Americas before the Spaniards arrived. The 17 plates were copied from the German editions of De Bry from 1597-1599 and helped to create the image of the Spaniard as a ruthless and inhuman monster. One plate was replaced by an engraving of the ship of Columbus. Our edition has an extra plate, showing Columbus breaking an egg, also copied from De Brys collection of voyages. Sabin 11264; Tiele, Mémoire 329; cf. Waller 1006 (Amsterdam ed. of 1607). Provenance: Eric Quayle. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CII.
