Congratulating Bentinck on the success that he has had in his professional life, especially in the "happy Conclusion of that Peace, which we now enjoy". Also stating that the English have great confidence in Bentinck's capability to handle Dutch finances and finishing off by writing that Bentinck can fully trust his sons to send any requests for help or service to him.

= Transcript of a document from the provincial archive of Zeeland dated 1602. Emilia van Nassau (1569-1629) was a daughter of William of Orange and was married to the Roman Catholic Emanuel of Portugal (1568-1638), much to the discontent of her family. The pair had 10 children. This document probably concerns Lodewijk Willem of Portugal (1601-1660), i.a. mentioning a yearly allowance of 250 guilders from the province of Zeeland.

= Probably letters to Lodewijk Theodoor van Nassau-LaLecq (1701-1748), major in the regiment of general Hop. Most of the letters are New Year wishes, occasionally with more personal information, such as the letter of 12 February 1746, written in French, in which Willem IV apologizes for late response to Lodewijk Theodor's letter (it was mislaid by one of his secretaries), writes that he hopes to see him soon and that he will find "La Petite Caroline bien grandie, et devenue assez drole. [continuing in Dutch:] Wij hebben er geloof ik weer Een op stapel. Adieu mon bon Ami (...)". In 1744 he writes about the weaknesses and the losses of the Dutch troups in the skirmishes in Northern France in May 1744. In 1745 he writes about the absence of any news from the war, and about the pleasure that the doll that he has sent to his daughter as a present has given her, and that she has for the first time pronounced his name correctly and clearly as Beverweert (instead of "Blake naise") after she had asked her mother Princess Royal Anna of Hannover, "Mama wat is Blake maise his true name". In his letter of 25 August 1745, he congratulates Lodewijk Theodoor on his success in the battlefield: "il est beau de voire comment vos garettes Holl. [...?] et embellissent toutes les Petites Rencontres [continued in Dutch:] zij noemen dat de Actie van Asche, en seggen dat U [...?] overal gedurende deselve in het heetste van het vuer geweest is (...)". Also writes about his daughter: "(...) et la Petite qui est ici pendant que j'ecris fait dire a Blak maise, that he must come to [Pins Carnill (?)], and that he has a great Wigg." An interesting series of letters, shedding some light on a friendship that clearly was dear to Willem IV and his family.

- One letter torn in half.
= Interesting collection of letters addressed to Alexander Sweder van Spaen, heer van Ringenberg, Haminkeln en Hardenstein (1703-1768), commander in the army of the United Provinces and close friend of Frederik the Great. In the letter dated April 4th 1739 Willem IV requests Van Spaen to stop the "Prince Royal" (Frederik the Great?) who is on his way to Zutphen and to hand him a letter that he has enclosed. The letter has an urgent tone. In the letter dated August 23rd 1742 Willem IV responds to a letter by Van Spaen informing him the "Roi de Prusse" will be visiting Wesel. Willem IV lets Van Spaen know that he will be travelling from the "Grand Maison" the next day. The final letter dated May 28th 1746 discusses the "Roi de Berlin" and the "Roi de Prusse": "Je vous suis tres oblige mon cher Spaan de votre enactitude a me donner des nouvelles de Berlin (...) Je suis surpris que le Roi de Prusse ne vous ait pas encor parlé, vous faites tres bien de vous tenir discretement a distance, mais pour quoi vous cacher derriere les autres courtisans j'aime vous mieux se mettre de facon a etre appercue". Other letters are i.a. New Year wishes and enquiries about an illness that Van Spaen has contracted ("Je suis bien aisé que vous etes en train de vous remettre, et je souhaite qu'on vous aye guerri radicalement d'un mal toujours terrible, mais surtout pour gens de notre metier"). It appears Alexander Sweder van Spaen acted as an intermediary between the different royal households of the 18th century.

= Includes the partition of the considerable estate of Maria Vincentendr. van Doeswerff between her son Vincent van Gooten, her sister Anthonia Vincentendr. van Doeswerff and other potential title holders, consisting of i.a. real estate in and surrounding Leyden ("een huijs ende erff staende binnen de voors. stede opten Nieuwen Rhijn aen de Vischbrugge genaempt den Boschboom", another "staende inde vergrootinge der Stadt Leijden aen de Oude Chingel omtrent de Nieuwe Maeren", "Item (...) staende mede binnen Leijden opte Legewerff anders genaempt de Kraeyvangersteech", "Een stuck weijlandts (...) gelegen in den Ambachte van Soeterwoude achter 't Huijs te Croonesteijn", "Een stuck hoijlandts (...) gelegen over de Poel inden Ambachte van Oegstgeest", "Den thuijn" and "de bleijckerije gelegen mede buijten de Zijlepoort inden Ambachte van Leijderdorp", 1643); a listing of promissory notes from the estate of Willem Joppen van Toll, compiled by bailiff Willem Duercant (1647) and 3 documents pertaining to the criminal proceedings against Thimon van Schoonhoven, former Leyden mayor, council member and VOC director (advice by Leyden's legal council on the question whether Van Schoonhoven may be extradited to the Court of Holland in order to face criminal charges of forsaking his oath in the civil case between him and Philippus Theodorus van Cloon, a copy of Van Schoonhoven's request to the States of Holland and West Friesland arguing his being summoned to appear in Court is unjust and a resolution by the same States denying Van Schoonhoven's request, thus opening the way to prosecution (1764)).

= Friedrich von Bodenstedt, author of i.a. the succesful collection of poems Die Lieder des Mirza Schaffy (1851), translator of various Russian and English works and finally director of the court theatre at Meiningen. The present letter difficult to read, but begins with mentioning that the day before writing he had buried his mother, who had died at the age of 86 years. Provenance (as stated on the printed folding leaf in which the letter is kept: "Autografensammlung von Amy Twiss". Amy Twiss (1860-1947) was married to A.L. Grothe and lived in "Villa Corvin", one of the main mansions of Hilversum (demolished in 1987). Amy Twiss founded the first Dutch open-air theater on the country estate in 1904. The three following autographs of this lot have the same provenance and are kept in an identical folding leaf.

= All sent to the "Internationaal Literatuur Bureau": giving permission for the performance of his play Hochzeit by Groningen students [(10/04/1982]; sending a contract for a Dutch paperback edition of Het Martyrium [07/06/1989]; and on theater adaptions of his works. "(...) Eben erhalte ich von Verlag Polak und Van Gennep eine Theaterbearbeitung meines Romans 'Die Blendung' zugeschickt. Ik kann auf keinen Fall meine Einwilligung zu einer Theaterbearbeitung des Romans geben. Man hat mich nie um Erlaubnis gebeten (...) und ich bin sehr erstaunt darüber (...). Ich wäre Ihnen dankbar, wenn man das glecih klarstellen könnte (...)" [08/06/1990]. "(...) Ich habe nun einen Brief vom Theater de Balie bekommen (...) und muss mich leider doch gegen eine dramatische Bearbeitung von 'Masse und Macht' entscheiden. = Beatrice Harraden, novelist and suffragette, best known for her Ships that pass in the Night (1893). Two letters addressed to other people (one to the journalist/ critic Meredith Starr and one to an unknown lady). In the letters in the album Beatrice Harraden discusses her novels with a correspondent of the name Mr J. Nicol Dunn, whose views she values highly. The letters in the album are preceded by a typescript factual introduction giving a short biography and listing some of her more famous works.

= Stamp of "Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart" on first free endpaper. Nothing could be traced on Petrus van Keimpema, but a loosely inserted "Certificate of Discharge" identifies him as born in Lemmer in 1850 and as being apprenticed as mate on the "Minerva" between Sept. 28, 1875 and June 1, 1876. Apparently he went to the Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart in Amsterdam, but did not opt for a career at sea. According to the registers that we consulted he married in 1880 and died in 1907. His job is described office clerk.
