"Varthema was a real traveller whose driving purpose was to see the sights. His reports on the social and political conditions of the various lands he visited are reliable as being gathered from personal contact with places and peoples, and are rich in the personal adventures of the author. His account of the overland trade is of great value in that we are made to see it before it had begun to give way to the all-seas route." (Cox). Very rare Dutch edition.

= The first critical edition of Villon's works, to be preferred above the earlier edition by Coustelier (publ. in 1723) because as Brunet states: "l'éditeur y a joint de nouvelles notes, quelques fragments inédits, des mémoires touchant Villon par Prosper Marchand, et une lettre critique extraite du "Mercure" de février 1724." Brunet V, p.1249; Tchemerzine-Scheler vol.X, p.480 b. Rare.

= The first edition, printed without the poet's consent. Preliminary leaves printed in Roman type, T'Loff der Mutse as well as Brabbeling printed in Civilité. Very rare. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CIV.

America 1548; Asher p.91, no.38; Asher list of the Byecorf no.4: "Memorial of the weighty reasons which ought to determine the States General not to give up the commerce and navigation to the (West) Indies in the treaty with Spain". Printed at the end "In dese derde Editie verbetert".

= The actual first edition of la Pucelle. Bengesco 478 and p.126: "On a voulu, dans ces derniers temps, que la véritable édition originale de la Pucelle fût l'édition qui se compose d'un faux titre (...) et de 161pp., s.l.n.d. (...). Pourtant il résulte et de la correspondance de Voltaire, et d'une lettre de M. de Saint-Sauveur (...), que la Pucelle fut d'abord imprimée à Francfort, "quoique supposée à Louvain". Et Voltaire, dans sa lettre à l'Académie française (novembre 1755), emploiera les mêmes expressions: "Ce poème a été d'abord imprimé à Francfort, quoiqu'il soit annoncé de Louvain." C'est donc l'une des deux éditions portant l'adresse de Louvain qui doit être considérée comme l'édition princeps de la Pucelle d'Orléans." Bengesco distinguishes two variant 1755 éditions with the Louvain imprint: édition A (8vo) and édition B (12mo), with several small differences. Our copy is édition A. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CIII.
