The second French edition published in the Northern Netherlands of this famous description of the Netherlands. The first edition, in Italian language, was published Antwerp, 1567, the illustrations mainly cut in wood. The first copperengraved edition, in Italian, appeared in 1581; this second edition with copperengravings was enlarged with 23 extra plans, i.a. by the Hogenberg brothers. The importance of Guicciardini's work as one of the major historical sources for the history of The Netherlands needs no further comment, nor the beauty of the work as illustrated book, reflecting the emerging self-confidence of the young republic at the beginning of its Golden Age.
