= Van den Brink 99; p.184: "Resolutie 8 December 1763". Rare. In 1763 the Rhineland surveyor Melchior Bolstra mapped the area of the Pannerdensche Kanaal and the Waal and Upper Rhine at Schenkenschans. This map must be viewed primarily in the light of the problems concerning the Waal bend at Herwen. Due to further incision of this Waal bend in time, a confluence with the Lower Rhine threatened, as a result of which the last watercourse would have to discharge much too large water masses with probably disastrous consequences. The intersection of the Bijlandsche Waard, through which the Waal would be maneuvered in the right direction, was a way to avoid this problem.
