"Seit längerer Zeit im Stabe der Königin angestellt, habe ich mich in meinem Musestunden mit Abzeichnen der verschiedenen militärischen und bürgerlichen Trachten der Spanier beschäftigt (...) so wie auch mehrer militarischer Operationen, von denen ich Augenzeuge war. (...) So viel mir bekannt, sind diese Skizzen die ersten der Art, welche in Europa publicirt werden, da man wohl durch viele schriftliche, jedoch noch nicht durch bildliche Darstellungen über den spanischen Krieg belehrt wurde".
