= A nice personal letter from the author to his artist friend, who at the time regularly published articles in De Nieuwe Gids: "Op het oogenblik zit ik vreeselijk in de drukte, want 4 Januari a.s. ga ik trouwen. Je stuk heb ik doorgezien en de eerste bladzijden en vind het heel mooi. Maar als je 't wilt omwerken, zie dan te zorgen s.v.p., dat ik het spoedig krijg. Wil je dat doen? (...) Je hebt een almachtig bijzonder talent. Placht dat hoe langer hoe meer te verwezenlijken in prachtig werk, zoals je al hebt gemaakt." SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XXXI.

= The addressee remains unidentified. In two letters Johan de Meester, who at the time was a member of the editorial staff of the other literary periodical De Gids (not De Nieuwe Gids, of which Kloos was one of the founders), is mentioned by name. "De stof der door u geschreven artikelen kan stellig interessant resten, maar wat mij in uw brief tamelijk duister is gebleven, is het volgende. De heer Johan de Meester is redakteur van [illegible] Gids en toch wenscht hij [illegible] niet in zijn eigen tijdschrift te behandelen, maar verwijst u naar mij, den redakteur [illegible] van de Nieuwe Gids (...) Maar zou het blijkbaar liever dat een ander orgaan (...) ervan profiteert. Zou(?) jij mij (...) eenige verklaring van die puzzle kunnen geven?" (August 26th). In the next letter Kloos writes that he does not fully understand why De Meester does not want to include said articles in his periodical. Kloos is willing to read the articles and consider publishing (September 6th). In the last letter Kloos says he finds the articles interesting. However he has some comments, among others, on the use of language and the theme. It becomes clear that Kloos is also not inclined to publish the articles (Ocotber 7th).

= Interesting copy: one of a small number of copies on JAPANESE, with the points of the first edition (i.a. mispagination of p.93, "heeerlijk" instead of "heerlijk" on p.96, "mage" instead of "magen" on p.98, and the lacking line spoken by Phaon on p.171 (which should read: "Neen, neen, zij sprak zóó raadslig, dat ik mijzelf verloor.")) but without the year "1894" on the title-p. Perhaps one of a few private copies printed for the author and/ or publisher to give away as present.

= Agatha Dina ("Ada") Kat (1924-2019) was the first great love of Harry Mulisch. She came from a musical family and sang in a Bach choir. When Harry met Ada, she worked at sheet music publisher Donemus. Music was an important factor in their relationship and in his letters Harry regularly refers to the music he listens to. After a relationship that lasted 3 years, they broke up in 1949. In 1951 Ada married an employee of Air Pakistan and got settled in Karachi. She divorced her husband in 1957 and returned to the Netherlands. In the early seventies she met her second husband and moved to London. Mulisch and Ada kept in touch until at least 1957. All her life Ada saved everything concerning her relationship with Harry Mulisch in a small suitcase (also included in the lot). The contents of that suitcase not only document the relationship between the two lovers, but also show the early writing of the ambitious young author and includes early, published and unpublished works from his hand. Thanks to a personal gift from Ada during her lifetime, the suitcase came into the possession of its current owner. Harry Mulisch was a dedicated archivist of his own work and manuscripts and typescripts by him are therefore extremely rare and rarely come onto the market. An interesting and highly iimportant collection, both from biographical and literary point of view.
"En nog twee belangrijke gebeurtenissen vonden in 1946 plaats. Ik ontmoette mijn vierde, of misschien moet ik nu zeggen mijn eerste grote liefde: Ada. Zij was vier jaar ouder dan ik en barstte in tranen uit toen zij hoorde, dat ik pas achttien was. Drie jaar zijn we samen opgetrokken, dat wil zeggen niet eeuwig, zoals ik mij toen had voorgenomen, en sinds lang is zij getrouwd met een pakistaanse prins in Karachi - of men het gelooft of niet. "Als hij haar leert kennen werkt Ada bij muziekuitgeverij Donemus en zingt zij in het koort van Piet van Egmond. Zij heeft een vaste baan en een goed salaris - en, arm als hij is, zal Mulisch een tijdlang op haar zak teren. (...) In haar jaren met Mulisch is Ada Kat getuige van zijn ontluikende schrijverschap en ook van zijn eerste succes: de publicatie van het verhaal 'De Kamer' in Elsevier. (...) = Friendly letters to the Dutch poet and musician Johan de Molenaar, concerning a poem by Pléiade poet Fernand Mazade, translated by Van Nijlen. In the first letter, the poet grants his colleague permission to include the poem in question in his anthology. "Andere poëtische vertalingen heb ik niet gemaakt, zoodat u zich met dit 'mager beestje' zult moeten tevreden stellen." In the second letter, Van Nijlen provides biographical and bibliographical information on Mazade "Ziedaar alles wat ik van hem weet." Letters by Van Nijlen are rare.
