= (Very) rare account by the Dutch artist Jan (Johan) Philip Koelman of his stay in Rome during the revolutionary year of 1848 and the Siege of Rome in that year up to 1851. It offers a unique glimpse into the international artistic bubble of what was then the art capital of the world. Moreover, it is also a rare eyewitness account of a turbulent period in the political history of Rome and Italy, which partly paved the way for Italian unification. Koelman's memoirs are more than a chronicle, however. Because of the intertwining of art and politics, it provides a truly unique source for cultural scholars concerned with themes such as the social and political engagement of artists, the artistic representation and resonance of the Risorgimento abroad, and the image of Italy in general.

= Written by the army officer, hunter and traveller Cornelius Marius de Jong van Rodenburgh (1816-1899). An interesting travel journal of a journey to Italy via the Tyrolian Alps. Besides various sideways and typical elaborate 19th century details, the author gives a lively description of his route through the Alps (i.a. the return of the first succesfull summit climbers of the Grossvenediger) and various places in Italy (Genoa, Palermo, Naples, Rome). But the most interesting part are his statements as an eyewitness of the Italian revolution and the conquest of southern Italy by GARIBALDI. He describes various scenes and people he encounters in Italy and their reaction to the events and an actual encounter with Garibaldi himself (with whom he converses in English) and his staff. Probably because he is an officer himself, he is allowed to be close to the frontlines during a battle between the Redshirts of Garibaldi and the royalist troops. He also hails a meeting with the author Alexandre Dumas, who joined Garibaldi's cause and is rewarded with the post of museum director In Naples.
