= Landwehr VOC, 829; BMN p.61; cf. Pritzel 7157, Hunt I, 244, Borba de Moraes II, p.676, Bosch 109 and Rouffaer/ Muller, suppl. II, p.124. Hirsch I, p.524 (J. de Bondt) and IV, p.577-578 (Willem P. Piso); Garrison/ Morton 2263 (ed. 1642): "Bontius was probably the first to regard tropical medicine as an independent branch of medical science. He spent the last four years of his life in the Dutch East Indies, and his book incorporates the experience he gained there. It is the first Dutch work on tropical medicine and includes the first modern description of beri-beri and cholera." DSB X, p.622: "Piso's fame rests on his work as physician of the Dutch settlement in Brazil (1636-1644), which had Johan Maurits van Nassau as governor. In Brazil he gathered data for the books that made him famous. (...) Piso recorded what he had learned in Brazil in his Historia Naturalis Brasiliae [Amst., 1648], a folio volume in twelve books, the first four of which are by Piso while the others, which deal chiefly with natural history, were written by Georg Markgraaff. The latter was probably an assistant to Piso (...). His [Piso's] editing of De Indiae [utriusque re naturali et medica, Amst., 1658] was done because the work was intended to be a handbook of tropical medicine, pharmacology, and natural history. His share covered the Americas, while the East Indies were represented by adding the works of Jacobus Bontius." The present edition is not a translation, but an abstract of the writings of Bontius, that Piso and Markgraaf ("doctoren in de Medicijne") compiled for the use of naval and tropical surgeons. The second part by Johan Verbrugge ("chirurgijn binnen Middelburg in Zeelandt") forms a catalogue of drugs that were usually taken by surgeons on travels to the East- and West-Indies, and comprises also a list of diseases that are common on those voyages and their cure. Cf. BMN p.296, listing the third edition published ±1675. Very rare edition; 3 copies in STCN (2 incomplete).
