= A fine and attractively bound copy with all plates in contemp. handcolouring. The book is the printed version of a popular show by George Alex Stevens from ±1765 onwards in England, Ireland and eventually in America. In 1774 he sold his production to the actor C.L. Lewes, who wasn't as succesful as the originator of the show. The caricatural portraits each come with a comment, of which we quote the opening lines to the portrait of the Dutchman: "This is the head (...) of Mynheer Van Neverfelt Large Breecho Love Cabbecho Dutch Doggero, a great merchant at Rotterdam (...) He considers treaties as mere court promises; and these, in the vulgar acceptation of a pie-crust, whenever they cover any advantage, it is but breaking the, and down with friendship and honour in a bite. He looks upon interest to be the true law of nature, and principle a Sinking Fund, in which no Dutchman should be concerned (...)." SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXV.
