2806 - 3510 OLD and RARE BOOKS
- Gilt on spines partly rubbed off; mor. letterpieces partly worn; foot of spine vol. 1 chipped; upper joints of all three vols. starting. Contents fine.
= SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LV.
- Lacks 2 plates (no. 3 and 19); first plate a few vague folds and a vague stain in lower margin; text leaves occas. sl. frayed in blank margins and partly vaguely waterstained in upper margin (not affecting the plates!). Binding worn along extremities (corners dam.).
= The plates are all printed in strong impressions. Interesting variant of the copy listed by F.M. 2301: all but 4 plates (from no.5 onwards) numbered one number lower in the plate than in F.M.: 5 (= F.M. 6), 6 (= 7) etc., suggesting that this is an early version of the rare first edition, before the numbering of the plates had become definite. See also Hollstein 1-19. The spectacular plates show the artistic talents of Van der Heide Senior, who was not only a wellknown painter, but also a gifted inventor. The book describes and illustrates several fires in Amsterdam during 1652-1684, and the implements used before and after the introduction of the author's new hose-pump. The fire fighting classic, rarely found in the first edition. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LV.

= Nijhoff/ Van Hattum 252; Tiele 876; Sabin 64002; Alden & Landis II, 611/91; Chavanne 116. First edition of the earliest history and description of the city of Amsterdam, of great influence on similar publications of later date. But at least as important for the incorporated extensive accounts of Dutch maritime trade and early Dutch exploration and navigation ±1594-1611. It for instance contains the famous report of Willem Barentsz' voyages to the Arctic region in search of a North-East passage to Asia (1594-1597), derived from De Veer's Diarium nauticum as well as from Van Linschoten's Diarium, illustrated with 8 textengravings. For the earliest reports of the Dutch explorations of Asia, including the famous voyage of Corn. de Houtman as well as for the descriptions of the Moluccas (i.a. of Banda & Ternate), Cape of Good Hope, Madagascar, the Coast of Guinee (etc.), the chapters 24, 25 and 26 (p.144-218) are of the greatest importance. The fine engravings in the text, starting with no.17 to no.49, include early maps and views of Madagascar, Banda and Indonesia (i.a. Java, Bantam and Bali), and of its flora and fauna. The Dutch edition was published three years later in 1614. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LVI.

London, 1740): "This famous and unfortunate expedition, consisting at the start of eight ships, was sent under the command of George Anson at the beginning of the war with Spain, to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America. Seven ships were lost around Cape Horn and on the coast of Chile and out of 900 men who left England on board more than 600 perished. (...) The primary object of the expedition was not attained, but by the capture of the Manila Galleon near China, Anson and the surviving members of his crew reached England much the richer. (...)
