- Old owner's entry on title-p. and final leaf. Letterpiece and gilt on spine worn off; carefully rebacked.
= Rare first Dutch edition. BMN I, p.167; Hirsch V, p.687-688; Bibl. Walleriana 9613; Gay/ Lemonnyer III, p.565. Popular work that went through numerous editions in several languages between 1760 and 1836. The first French edition was published in Lausanne in 1760. Other Dutch editions were published 1775, 1822 and 1827.
- Lacks vols. 9 and 10; all vols. 2 bookplates on upper pastedown (i.a. of Evert Strokink). Frontcovers of 2 vols. w. traces of silverfish nibbling. Otherwise a good/ fine set.
- Small rust hole in title-p. (causing sm. browned spot in first few preliminary lvs); one plate trimmed to/ just inside the (fraying) lower border; lacks first free endpaper; the second half partly foxed/ sl. browned. Otherwise fine.
= Milkias 9136; Streit XVI, 4654; Paulitschke 1156; Gay 2658; Fumagalli 1429. First edition of one of the earliest and most important publications on Ethiopia, with beautiful large plates of i.a. sheep, apes, elephants and a hippopotamus. A commentary volume by Ludolf was published 10 years after the present vol. Hiob Ludolf (1624-1704) was the founder of the study of Ethiopic linguistics. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXIX.

= WITH duplicates of the plates 7, 13, 17, 18 and 20. Lipperheide Gb 39; Landwehr 358: "The first Dutch book of costumes dealing with various provinces (...); it gives also interesting details on the morals and customs of these regions. (...) carefully hand-coloured plates (...)".
- Outer blank margins of first 7 lvs. restored/ remargined w. use of japanese (incl. engr. title and frontisp. portrait); occas. underlinings in green pen and ink; outer blank margin waterstained throughout. Restored binding w. use of modern vellum.
- Title-p. cut sl. short (just inside the borderline); a few leaves trifle wormholed in upper blank margin. Otherwise fine.
= Rare. Florimonte (1484-1565) was mentored by the philosopher Augusto Nifo and though seeking to educate the spirit of Renaissance man through his study of the works of Aristotle, he remained, in case of conflicting ideas between classical and Christian philosophy, convinced of the superioity of Christian thought over Greek thought.
