= The 'Cohieren' were intended to register the owners and tenants of properties eligible for voting, usually farms. Friesland had a total of over 10,000 properties eligible for voting. Since the sixteenth century, the town councils had maintained lists of these properties, but this method apparently proved inadequate. In 1640, the States of Friesland decided that a central registry should be established for the entire province. The registries thus compiled list the owners and tenants of all properties eligible for voting. In later years, the registries were renewed in several town councils, and a complete revision followed in 1698. After that, the registries were updated every ten years, most recently in 1788. Interesting for genealogical research.
