69/2558 [Entomology]. Rösel van Rosenhof, A.J. De Natuurlyke Historie der Insecten. Voorzien met naar 't Leven getekende en gekleurde Plaaten. Vol. I-IV and Supplement. Haarlem/ Amst., C.H. Bohn/ H. de Wit, (1764-1788), 5 parts in 9 vols., 3 handcol. frontisp., portrait (uncol.) and 386 (fold.) handcol. plates, early 19th cent. unif. gilt hcloth, large 4to.

- The first plate of vol. III trifle dam. (paper from opposite textp. formerly stuck to one of the insects), otherwise contents very fine. Covers sl. worn. A very fine and clean set on large paper (27,1x21,1 cm.).

= Including the "Vervolg" w. more pages (240p.), than the 192p. Landwehr calls for at the most. Hagen II, 84; Junk, Rara 162; Nissen, ZBI 3467; Landwehr, Dutch Books w. Col. Plates 161. One of the finest and most celebrated works on insects, translated from the original German edition (1740-1746) by C.F.C. Kleemann, the son-in-law of the author, with the same plates. This Dutch edition is unanimously considered to be preferable to the German edition: (much) larger size on thicker paper and superior colouring by Kleemann and his wife Katharina Barbara Rösel von Rosenhof. Our copy has 2 more plates than called for in Landwehr, Dutch Books w. Col. Plates 161. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXXIX.
