= Parr/ Badger, p.130: "His work consisted mainly of portraits, but whereas [August] Sander was careful to photograph his subjects in their social settings, Lerski used the studio, and focused entirely on the head, effectively de-socializing them. Using studio lights and a system of mirrors, he lit them in an intensely dramatic, hyperbolic way that reflects the Expressionist lighting of the films on which he worked, especially the psychological thrillers and horror films."
