The expedition by Lewis and Clark was one of the major factors leading up to the opening up of the North West of America. After earlier plans conceived by President Jefferson had been shelved, the Louisiana Conquest was the logical moment for the execution of his wish to explore the region between the Mississippi and the Pacific. The map of Lewis and Clark's track as well as their account of the exploration (first publ. Philadelphia, 1814), more or less directly led to the Great American Westward movement. Howes L317; cf. Johnson, America Explored p.219ff; Church1309; Sabin 40830 and Howgego L31. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXII.
