= German artist and forger of World War II memorabilia Konrad Kujau gained notoriety as the author of the so called Hitler Diaries, which for some time were believed to be authentic. In 1983 Kujau sold the manuscripts to a journalist for 2.5 million DM, who in turn sold it to Stern Magazine for 9.3 million. When the diaries turned out to be forgeries, Kujau turned himself in and spent 3 years in jail.
