77/5279 Bagelaar, E.W.J. (1775-1837). (Ets en graveerwerk van E.W.J. Bagelaar). Collection of 116 etchings in 210 different states by E.W.J. BAGELAAR, various sizes, all tipped-in in contemp. gilt hcalf w. red mor. letterpiece, folio.

- Hinges split. Binding worn. Contents very fine.

= Evidently a collection that aimed to represent the complete etchings by Bagelaar, in all different states known (possibly put together by Bagelaar himself, or at least by someone very close to him, judging by the accompanying contemp. annotations on the various states of the etchings and the occasional identification of the locations shown). According to information supplied in an accompanying short version of a publication by F. Wilbrink, Bagelaar's etched work consists of at least 189 different etchings. Nevertheless the collection offered is this lot forms a large part of Bagelaar's graphic oeuvre and is especially interesting for the large number of different states that are present. No similar collection was traced by us on the market or auction records of the past decades. Interestingly, Bagelaar made quite a few copies after old master etchings. Among them is series of copies in reverse after Cuyp's Set of Cows, which includes a loosely inserted leaf w. two tipped-in etchings: a title-p. to the Set of Cows reading "VI Stuks Koitjes Geëtst door A. Cuyp" (dismissed as being by Cuyp by the Rijksmuseum and listed as "Anonymous") and an etching in the manner of the Cows by Cuyp signed in pencil "Bagelaar f." This might solve the question of the authorship of the title-etching to the series. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XCV.
