= Reichelt 41. The first edition of this famous study by Francis Douce (1757-1834), his lifework, published one year before his death. "La dissertation (...) est un morceau fort curieux" (Brunet II, p.257). Warthin p.86: "(...) one of the best facsimile copies. (...) They are very faithful copies and have been described as scarcely distinguishable from the originals. This is a slight exaggeration, but the cuts are, nevertheless, extremely good copies. Douce's book marks the beginning of the serious study of the Dance of Death mythus. In it he collected an immense amount of data concerning the known editions of the Dance of Death illustrations, and the greater part of this is quite accurate." "Unentbehrliches Handbuch und Nachschlagewerk für Sammler." (Oppermann 1146).
