In the excellent and elaborate introduction dated 1851 he demonstrates a good understanding of the principles of cartography. In his atlas he has introduced for the first time a correct choropleth map of the Netherlands. The contents of the original Historical Atlas of 1865 is on a very high cartographical level. Mees, Eekhoff and Staring are considered the only three intelligent Dutch cartographers of the mid-nineteenth century." (Koeman VI, p.207-208).
