"The botanist Pitton de Tournefort set out for the Levant in 1700 on a mission for Louis XIV. He was accompanied by the artist Claude Aubriet, whose drawings were engraved for the work, and by the doctor Gundelsheimer. The party travelled extensively in the Greek archipelago and Crete, continuing on to Constantinople and Asia Minor, then overland to Persia, returning to Paris in 1702." (Atabey).
