84/3936 [Chinese export watercolours]. Lot of 39 watercolours, all painted on pith paper, 19th cent., all between glass plates, a few w. paper on verso, between ±8x14 and 18x27 cm., together in custom made contemp. burl walnut chest with brass straps and lock with key (17x50x23 cm.).

- One watercolour badly damaged, most others fine but w. small defects in outer blank margins/ corners.

= Splendid collection with delicate drawings and vibrant colours. Provenance: late 19th cent. manuscript label reading: "W.B.[?] Loudon. Un souvenir de son voyage en Chine et en Japon". Depicting various themes: a procession (4x), butterflies, insects and flowers (13x), birds (4x), court costumes (6x), boats (2x), furniture and decorative objects for use in house (incl. a calligraphy desk) (4x), harbour/ town views (4x) and women in and around a garden and house (2x).
