84/4007 Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). (The pirate Kokusenya/ Koxinga subduing a tiger). Twelve drawings from the same work, all 47x15,4 cm., brush and ink and graphite, signed Kuniyoshi ga, with paper wrapper signed Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi hitsu.

- With binding holes in upper margin; w. num. (closed) wormholes; soiled; horizontal foldline; w. repairs on verso; partly doubled; yellowed.

= These 12 drawings are designs for pillar prints (hashira-e). Six of these designs depict Kokusenya from the kabuki play Kokusenya Kassen (The battles of Koxinga) by Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653-1725). This is a story loosely based on the historical Ming dynasty general Koxinga/ Zheng Chenggong (1624-1662), who defeated the Dutch in Taiwan. The other drawings include the Chinese warrior Guan Yu, Urashima Tarô as an old man and other famous personifications. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LIII.
