= Very rare Japanese grammar, first published by Suwaraya Ihachi for the Japanese market and intended to further the knowledge and understanding of the Dutch language, which provided the Japanese with the possibility to gain knowledge of western (medical) sciences and to communicate with Dutch officials. The importance of the Dutch language in Japan, however, declined after 1854 and by 1870 Dutch was hardly used by anyone in Japan, English having become the lingua franca.
