- A very fine set, with only a few plates in Snellen van Vollenhoven sl. foxed; one plate w. a sm. (closed) tear just touching the image. First 8 vols. joints professionally restored; final 5 vols. paper over boards sl. worn. Otherwise fine and hardly ever found as complete and attractively bound as this set.
= The work was published in instalments over a period of 166 years, making it very difficult to find a complete and uniformly bound set (one more vol. was published in the series: P.C.T. SNELLEN, Determinatie der lepidoptera, afgebeeld in het werk: Beschouwingen der wonderen Gods (...) (Amst., 1862)). This set consists of the following works: I. (First Series:) J.C. SEPP, Beschouwingen der wonderen Gods (...) (Amst., J.C. Sepp, 1762-1860, 8 vols.; II. (Second series:) S.C. SNELLEN VAN VOLLENHOVEN, Beschrijvingen en afbeeldingen van Nederlandsche vlinders (Amst., J.C. Sepp & zoon, 1860-1900, 4 vols.); III. (Third series) A. BRANTS, Nederlandsche vlinders beschreven en afgebeeld (The Hague, 1905, orig. wr. pres.). Landwehr, Dutch Books w. Col. Plates 182 and 202; Nissen ZBI, 3808 and 3808a; Hagen II, 153; Horn & Schenkling IV, 20145. One of the finest books on butterflies ever published, with splendid, detailed plates (and esp. in first 8 vols., interesting explanations of the more enigmatic Dutch names of some of the butterflies). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XLIII.
