84/1773 [Entomology]. Sepp, J.C./ Snellen van Vollenhoven, S.C., Snellen, P.C.T. and Brants, A. Beschouwing der wonderen Gods, in de minstgeachte schepzelen of Nederlandsche insecten, naar hunne aanmerkelyke huishouding, verwonderlyke gedaantewisseling en andere wetenswaardige byzonderheden./ Beschrijvingen en afbeeldingen van Nederlandsche Vlinders. Amst., J.C. Sepp/ J.C. Sepp & Zoon/ The Hague, M. Nijhoff, 1762-1928 (vol. 1-8)/ 1860-1900 (vol. 9-13), 8/ 5 vols., 8 handcol. engr. title-p., 611 handcol. engr./ lithogr. plates, occas. heightened w. gold and silver, the first 8 vols. bound in contemp. almost unif. gilt hcalf w. 2 mor. letterpieces, the final 5 vols. bound in contemp. sl. different (2x marbled) gilt hcalf bindings w. 2 mor. letterpieces, 4to.

- A very fine set, with only a few plates in Snellen van Vollenhoven sl. foxed; one plate w. a sm. (closed) tear just touching the image. First 8 vols. joints professionally restored; final 5 vols. paper over boards sl. worn. Otherwise fine and hardly ever found as complete and attractively bound as this set.

= The work was published in instalments over a period of 166 years, making it very difficult to find a complete and uniformly bound set (one more vol. was published in the series: P.C.T. SNELLEN, Determinatie der lepidoptera, afgebeeld in het werk: Beschouwingen der wonderen Gods (...) (Amst., 1862)). This set consists of the following works: I. (First Series:) J.C. SEPP, Beschouwingen der wonderen Gods (...) (Amst., J.C. Sepp, 1762-1860, 8 vols.; II. (Second series:) S.C. SNELLEN VAN VOLLENHOVEN, Beschrijvingen en afbeeldingen van Nederlandsche vlinders (Amst., J.C. Sepp & zoon, 1860-1900, 4 vols.); III. (Third series) A. BRANTS, Nederlandsche vlinders beschreven en afgebeeld (The Hague, 1905, orig. wr. pres.). Landwehr, Dutch Books w. Col. Plates 182 and 202; Nissen ZBI, 3808 and 3808a; Hagen II, 153; Horn & Schenkling IV, 20145. One of the finest books on butterflies ever published, with splendid, detailed plates (and esp. in first 8 vols., interesting explanations of the more enigmatic Dutch names of some of the butterflies). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XLIII.
